The 2016-17 academic year could not have begun in a more challenging fashion for Methuen’s Sarah Dockham.
How does an all-nighter homework session the night before classes start sound?
“I thought I had all my summer work completed, but then I found out there was an additional piece,” remembered Dockham with a laugh. “I was not going into the first day of school without my work done! So I stayed up all night and finished it."
When you are an academic standout to the level of Dockham, showing up without the work simply is not an option.
Dockham’s accomplishments both in the classroom and as a runner have earned her girls Moynihan Lumber Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
It is the most recent academic/athletic honor for the Methuen High senior.
She was recently named the MIAA Student Athlete of the Month for November and was also honored as an MVC Female Student Athlete of the Year in the fall. She also took home the MVC Community Service Award, due in part to her work with Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD).
And it hasn’t happened without plenty of hard work.
“Oh yeah, there have be some LONG nights,” she said. “Especially senior year. Between school and running and everything going on with senior year, there have been some tough nights. But the classroom is what I really try to focus on. That and how to interact with my peers and grow more as a student.”
Dockham is ranked in the top 15 percent of her Methuen High class of 430 and scored a stellar 1,270 out of 1,600 on the SATs. The National Honor Society Student is currently enrolled in Advanced Placement government, physics and statistics.
She is also a standout and captain in cross country and indoor and outdoor track, which she picked up after a concussion in the eighth grade ended her soccer and softball careers.
This fall, she was named the MVP of the girls cross country team. She was the No. 3 local finisher at the Eastern Mass, girls meet in 20:46.39.
This winter in indoor track, she placed third in the two-mile at the MSTCA Winter Festival in 12:28.98 and is unbeaten in dual meets.
Dockham said she would love to run in college, where she is planning to study pre-law. Some of her top schools include Boston University and Washington College (Chestertown, Md.)
She also happened to be one of 36 Methuen High students who were headed to Washington, D.C. this past Friday for the inauguration of President Donald Trump
“I love track and cross country,” she said. “The moment I decided to run, I was in love. The first practice of freshman year, I knew running was for me. I just loved the feeling.
“Seven hours of school every day isn’t the most exciting thing. So running is my motivation. I am happier after I run, and I more energized to study.”
